This free trip around the world quilt pattern is a perfect way to use up your scrap fabrics or buy several fat quarter bundles. It’s a beautiful quilt pattern. This quilt measures 60 1/2″ x 72 1/2″.

Fabrics Needed:

  • 1- 2/1/2″ square for center piece (A)
  • 1/3 Yard of each fabric B, C, D E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, and N
  • 3 5/8 yards of fabric for sashing strips, borders and binding.
  • 3 3/4 yards of backing fabric
  • 67″ x 79″ of quilt batting

Things to Know:

  • Finished quilt is: 60 1/2″ x 72 1/2″ with border and binding
  • You will use a 1/4″ seam allowance for all sewing.
  • Sew with right sides together and press your seams in the directions noted

Cut Borders-Binding-Sashing

  • 7- 2 1/2″ x 42″ binding strip
  • 2- 4″ x 73″ border strips
  • 2- 4″ x 54″ border strips
  • 2- 1 1/2 x 64 1/2″ inner border strips
  • 2- 1 1/2″ x 50 1/2″ inner border strips
  • 24- 1 x 50 1/2″ sashing strips

Assemble The Quilt Center

  1. Lay out all the 2 1/2″ squares in 25 horizontal rows according to the alphabetical designations.
  2. Sew together the squares in each row of your free trip around the world quilt pattern. Press seam allowances in one direction.
  3. Join the rows to make the quilt center, alternating pieced rows with sashing strips (1″ x 50 1/2″ strips)
  4. Press all seam allowances toward the sashing strips. The pieced quilt center should measure 50 1/2″ x 62 1/2″

Add Your Borders

Sew the inner border strips ( 1 1/2″ x 50 1/2″) to the top and bottom edges of the pieced quilt center.

Add the inner border side pieces (1 1/2″ x 64 1/2″) to your quilt. Press all seam allowances toward your inner border.

Piece the assorted solid color 1 1/4″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles maintaining the same color progression as in the quilt top to make the following:

  • 2- 1 1/4 x 52 1/2″ middle border strips
  • 2- 1 1/4 x 66″ middle borer strips

Sew the short pieced middle border strips to the top and bottom edges of the pieced quilt center. Add the long pieced middle border strips to the side edges of the pieced quilt center.

Press all seam allowances toward the inner border.

Sew the outer border strips (4×54″) to the top and bottom edges of the pieced quilt center. Then add the outer border strips (4″ x 73″) to the side edges of the pieced quilt center to complete the quilt top. Press all the seam allowances towards the outer border.

Complete your Free Trip around the World Quilt Pattern

  1. layer your quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired.
  2. Bind your quilt and use it on your bed or give it as a gift.
