Nine Patch Star Quilt Block

This nine patch star quilt block is super easy to make, even for a beginner quilter. You can easily make a baby quilt using 30 of these quilt blocks.

Cutting Your Fabric

  • Light/White: 4 – 2.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles, and 5 – 2.5″ squares
  • Green: 4 – 2.5″ squares
  • Pink floral: 12 – 2.5″ squares

Sew Your Nine Patch Star Quilt block

Nine Patch Unit:

  • Lay out the Green 2.5″ squares and the Light/White 2.5″ squares in the typical Nine Patch configuration as shown in the picture above.
  • Sew the squares into three rows using a 1/4 seam allowance.
  • Press your seam allowances toward the Green squares.
  • Next, sew the three rows together and press your seam allowances toward the middle row after you have sewn all your rows.

Modified Flying Geese Units:

  • Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of 8 of the Pink 2.5″ squares.
  • Place a Dark/Pink 2.5″ square on each end of a Light/White 2.5″ x 6.5″ rectangle and sew along the marked line. Make sure to keep the diagonal line going in the correct direction. (Top image)
  • Match up the corners of the Pink 2.5″ squares and press.
  • Trim away the excess seam allowance.
  • Refold and press your seams of your nine patch star quilt block

Assemble Your Quilt Block

Lay out the center Nine Patch unit, the Modified Flying Geese units, and the 4 remaining Pink 2.5″ squares as shown in the picture above.

Above your nine patch quilt block, place a flying geese and then place a pink floral piece next to each. You will do that on the top and bottom and add a modified flying geese on each side.

Sew each row and then each row. You want to press your seam allowances away from the modified flying geese.

Congrats, you have finished your nine patch star quilt block. You can either hang it up or repeat the process and make a quilt.

You need 30 quilt blocks to make a baby quilt and just adjust the number of quilt blocks depending on the size of the quilt you are making.
